A Problem Aboard

Her name is Carol, and she's perplexed. The new employee, Martin, has so much going for him, and yet... He almost always gets to work on time, but during the first hour or two on the job, he's often in what can best be described as a zombie-like state.
It's interfering with the crew's productivity. And despite his engaging personality, Martin's sleepiness sometimes makes him comes across to customers as surly and inattentive. The manager appears not to be aware of the problem. But Carol knows what to do. The time for Sysdine Peer Reviews is fast approaching.
Late Nights, Early Mornings

His name is Martin, and he's sleepy. These early-morning work hours can be a real challenge. But when a guy has a great new girlfriend, plus college homework to keep up with, it's easy to forget how late it's getting at night.
On the other hand, Martin genuinely enjoys working here, and he feels that he's doing a good job. His parents instilled in him a strong work ethic, and he thinks he might like to stay here for his three remaining years of college work.
A Time for Review

As the manager of the store, you're also concerned about Martin. You realize the problems that his early-morning grogginess is causing. If this problem is corrected, he might well become a top-flight employee.
But you're also acutely aware that you haven't been a manager for very long, and that your experience is limited in handling these types of challenges. You feel a bit awkward about the fact that Martin's age is only slightly less than your own. It's a situation tailor-made for Sysdine's Peer Review process.

As Peer Reviews begin, Carol sits at the computer and ranks herself and her associates in each of ten areas of performance. For Martin, she's careful to note that improvement is needed in certain of those areas.
Making Things Better

Once all employees have entered their Peer Reviews, you tell Sysdine to finalize the Reviews. For each employee, Sysdine produces a graphical Performance Profile, showing how the employee compares to the others in each area, and to his or her own self-evaluation. You schedule a private session with each employee to discuss their opportunities for performance improvement, and to prepare a plan of action.
Martin is surprised as you point out the concerns his problem has raised among his co-workers. He quickly identifies several things he can do to assure that his evening activities do not interfere with his getting sufficient sleep.
The two of you agree on the actions Martin will take, and you set a date on which you will meet to review his progress. You enter this plan into Sysdine for future tracking and follow-up. You compliment Martin on the areas in which his co-workers have pointed out that he is doing well. It's been a positive meeting, and one that bodes well for his future with you.
